POST-MATCH DIMITROV INTERVIEW

Shortly after the biggest win of his carrier (so far), Dimitrov couldn’t find words to express his joy to the journalist that was interviewing him on court. He said he was ‘”more than overwhelmed” and, at first, could utter just a few WOWs.

He reckoned that his opponent wasn’t at his best, but he was happy about his own attitude, having fought hard till the end and having come back after a second set, in which he was up a break, that he eventually lost at the tie break. “In the end- he says- there’s Novak Djokovic against you, one of the best returners in the game”.

He then thanked his team and family and more than a few words were dedicated to his (not so) mysterious girlfriend. He thanked her for what she told him before the match: “words I will remember for the rest of my life”, says the Bulgarian.

“The match against Djokovic- he says- was very tough phsically. I also had cramps here and there during the match and I was in a lot of pain”.

Dimitrov will need to recuperate quickly after this tough match. His third round match will take place on Thursday (probably against Stan Wawrinka), but he will be in action again today in the doubles tournament, pairing with another rising star, canadian Milos Raonic, against the more experienced couple Haas-Stepanek.

Maybe this win is the start of something new (and something entirely his own) for the young Bulgarian, always depicted by press and fans as the “new Federer” or “Baby Fed” .

For sure, he seems ready and mature enough to take on the challenge of stepping out of Federer’s shadow and begin his own path, a path that could lead him very high in the tennis Olympus.

“Life goes on. It’s just a match, so I have to stay on the ground and hopefully I’m gonna have many more battles and wins.”

We hope so too, Grigor.
