Although Dominic Thiem fought valiantly and showed signs of his strength on the dirt it was clear in the straight sets win that Nadal was many levels above Thiem and never really seemed tested in the way he was pushed by Djokovic in Novak’s glory years.
This match reminds me of
@rogerfederer winning Wimbledon 2017 where he had a decent challenge from his opponent Marin Cilic but nowhere near Federer level – just shows how strong the top players are compared to the rest of the field.
Nadal’s win also brings into focus that the last 11 major titles have been won by someone over 30 years of age. Jimmy Connors had held the record for longest span of holding the #1 ranking after turning 30 years of age. Now in the last 12 months, Nadal and Federer have both broken it. A testament to their greatness as well as Connors’ longevity in an era that didn’t have the same sports science. Only 3 players over 30–years-old have won two majors in the same year – Rod Laver 1969; Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The year is 2038. 58 year old Rafa Nadal has won The French Open again.
Speaking of Djokovic there were shadows of a higher level at the French Open however he met an inform Cecchinato ranked no. 72 at the time. Before this week Cecchinato had never won a match at a grand slam. It was the Cinderella story of Roland Garros.
Roger Federer ever the emoji king wrote on his Facebook “Go play as your favorite player😉 on the ATP World Tour game. You can find it on Xbox or PS4.🔥”
Probably the biggest letdown of the French was the Sharapova Williams match. It seemed like it had all the elements of a personal rivalry. Love the drama mama match between Serena and Maria!! What an epic cat fight! Maria had a real chance to take out an out of form Serena and change her 2-19 head to head. Sweet Revenge could be in the cards for Maria. On the other hand Serena can show us what a wonder women she really is coming back from childbirth strong enough to beat her arch nemesis in tennis. Who do you think will get the win ? Unfortunately Serena withdrew with a pectoral injury only minutes before the match and we were all left hanging. Maria did indeed win but not in the way we all thought. She went on to be destroyed by Garbiñe Muguruza who went on to be destroyed by Simona Halep. Such is tennis.
Finally, I leave you with a quote from Roger Federer urging us to all respect each other. It’s a good reminder that it is after all just a game and having respect for people is a higher value than winning or losing.
